Apple is planning to add a whole lot of cool new emojis — here’s what’s coming

Impact

iOS 10 arrives this fall, and with it, a whole bunch of new emojis. Earlier this month, we learned Apple plans to add over 100 icons — many of which feature female variations to formerly male-only options. Many of them will include female emojis for sports-related activities, including weight lifting, cycling and basketball and female-specific job emojis such as construction workers and detectives, as well.

"This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options," Apple wrote in a company statement.

The new emojis were developed in collaboration with Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit organization in charge of standardizing emoticons across all hardware and operating systems.

In addition, it was revealed on Thursday that Apple proposed five new career emojis — artist, astronaut, firefighter, judge and pilot — to be include in the new Unicode Version 4.0 update. Each of these icons will have gender and skin tone options. For a full breakdown of the latest update, head over to the official Emojipedia.

iOS 10 will feature a completely revamped iMessage system that implements larger emojis and adds a simple tap-to-replace system that instantly substitutes words for emojis.
