Halloween Costume Ideas: James Holmes Costume Banned by eBay Out of Respect for Aurora Shooting Victims

It's mid-October, which naturally means that people across America are planning their Halloween costume for this year's fright night. Dark and spooky masks, including the famous Scream Mask, are often popular costume choices on the scariest night of the year, but one unidentified seller on eBay has gone to far, trying on Monday to sell a Halloween mask of Colorado movie theater shooting suspect James Holmes.

eBay has decided to cancel the posting of the Holmes mask, after a seller using the alias "realface13" tried to sell the mask for hundreds of dollars. The eerie masks shows Holmes as he appeared in the courtroom after the Aurora shooting, with orange hair and looking deranged. The real Holmes said he was "The Joker" and had dyed his hair bright orange before entering an Aurora theater and opening fire at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Twelve people were killed and 58 others wounded in the tragedy.

Before it was pulled down, the eBay ad originally read: "SHOCK EVERYONE YOU KNOW! There is nothing more scary than crawling into James Holmes mind and wearing his face. His ‘soul penetrating eyes’ and ‘The Joker’ orange hair makes this mask the most disturbing object you will ever own. Imagine owning the mask of supposedly the most dangerous mass murderer in US history."

The unidentified seller says he/she won the mask in a high-stakes poker tournament in Europe. It was initially listed at $500. There were no bids for the item before it was deleted.

eBay says it took down the listing because it did not comply with its policies. "The listing was removed because it did not comply with our Offensive Materials policy. Out of respect for victimes of violent crimes, eBay does not allow listings that attempt to profit from human tragedy or suffering."

This is one case in which eBay was complete right to pull down this sick posting. Dressing up as James Holmes is entirely beyond the bounds of propriety this year. Halloween trick-or-treaters should stick to dressing as pop sensation Psy from Gangnam Style (frequently mentioned as one of this year's top costume selections), not the maniac Aurora killer.
