MIT Campus is Safe, Say MIT Police

Impact

The MIT police have announced that the Cambridge campus is safe following earlier reports that an officer was shot multiple times and killed on campus.

The event began at around 10:45 p.m. EDT on Thursday night, when an MIT officer was killed during a violent incident possibly relating to a campus theft. The scene then shifted to Watertown, where shots were traded between one or multiple suspects and a pursuing group of Boston police officers including SWAT officers. One officer was wounded in Watertown, according to live coverage, and a suspect was taken into custody. CNN is currently reporting explosives and automatic gunfire were involved in the incident, though it is unclear whether such reports can be corroborated.

As this incident dies down, it is additionally unclear whether there is any connection to Monday's Boston Marathon terrorist attack, though such a link seems unlikely.
