Ailina Tsarnaev: Sister Of Suspected Boston Bombers Speaks Up

Impact

Interviewed from behind the door of her home in West New York (New Jersey), Ailina Tsarnaev, sister of the two suspected Marathon Bombers – Dzokhar Tsarnaev, 19, and deceased Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26 – sent her apologies to those affected by the bombing.  In the video by Frances Micklow of the New Jersey Star Ledger, she also seemed skeptical and shocked by her brothers' involvement in the bombing.

I'm sorry to those who lost loved ones … I am not okay, just like anyone else is not okay, no one is okay right now … this is very shocking news… he was a great person, he was a kind and loving man, and the cops took his life away … if this is even true… no one knows the truth ... I have no idea whether this was my brother r… (Dzokhar) is an amazing child.

When asked about the last time she spoke with her brothers, her husband interjected stating that it was years since they'd spoken; her family had not accepted him because he was not Muslim.

Tamerlan – killed last night in a shootout with police in Watertown, Massachusetts — and Dzokhar, are both of Chechen descent, but their family had moved between Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, and Dagestan — a center of rebellion and growing Islamist influence in the Caucus region – before coming to the United States in 2003. While Tamerlan, a competitive boxer, had been previously arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, Dzokhar was said to be a social and outgoing member of the Cambridge community. Former teacher Larry Aaronson called Dzokhar a "lovely, lovely kid" who was "so grateful to be here in school and so grateful to be accepted."

It has been speculated that the two are part of a Chechen jihadi network, though this remains unconfirmed. The boys' uncle says that their actions have no connection to Islam, and are results of the two boys being "losers" who couldn't find their niche in America. Tamerlan was wearing explosives and a triggering device when he died, a source briefed on the investigation told CNN's Deborah Feyerick.
