Rick Mathews Not quite certain Movie Making Industry is not brave in this instance as they realize, they can make enough profit eventually selling movies such as Spider Man to the generation who grew up with him and identified with his struggles that unfortunately happens to be Old White Guys like me. You are becoming a Super Star. I hope you can stay pure to your passions. Peace be with you.
Rick Mathews This essay reveals one more major negative of Federal Reserves QE programs which were wonderful for Equity markets but produced an array of unintended consequences for both Millennials and Senior Citizens. When you have "FREE MONEY," housing prices are going to spike including the cost of renting. I can buy a four bedroom house near the college campus my sons are attending for a lower monthly cost as a mortgage than must pay to live on campus as freshmen. My cost is lower without roommates. Yesterday PM ran a telling essay on problems of a couple in N.Y. who are retired and can't afford the ever increasing rents that are occurring. Very well researched article. Thank you.
Rick Mathews How can anything which economically positively impacts less than 10% of this nation be expected to ever be popular? The 10-15 million additional minors the PPACA was written to be covered by expanded Medicaid are rarely if ever going to poll as applauding this legislation. The 5-10 million Individual health insurance purchasers who buy coverage through the exchanges getting subsidies or are under 26 and can stay on their parents policies only represent at most 3% of all non-minors in the country. The 5 million Americans who had pre-existing conditions and formerly could not get coverage are an even smaller polling block. But to the 87% of Americans who had coverage which is now altered by the PPACA, they are not happy. Who knew.
Rick Mathews Lauren: I dispute nothing written nor I would expect to do so having read many of your essays. I will though ask you to consider a future essay chronicling the historically ground breaking storylines developed by Marvel which placed Jean Grey as the powerful Mutant in history as a member of the X-Men. Saw the Invisible Girl developed into one of the most powerful Super Hero's of her day while by the way becoming a mom. Marvel brought us Power Man to the Black Panthers as hero's who were not White Guys. Marvel gave us Super Hero's from Galaxy's far, far away that were not everything from living Rocks to Tree's to what we on Earth call animals. Yes, Marvel had and has its flaws. But they've done some things well too.
Rick Mathews Frank - I voted for Senator Obama to become President even though I've know and worked with Senator McCain for nearly twenty years. I do not regret that vote and would do the same today. I did not vote for the President in 2012 purely due to my disagreement with what Congress in my opinion needed to actually legislate particularly regarding long-term entitlement programs such as SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. And no, I'm not for vouchers for Medicare or Chained COLA for S.S. Our President has done what I thought he could and in some instances more. But much like many Presidents, his agenda did not turn out to align well with unexpected circumstances of his Presidency. Peace out.
Rick Mathews Frank - as usual we largely agree. But history proves King Harry left the most Bills never to see the light of day in the Senate passed by the House to die in 2009-2010. Worse yet, those Bills were passed often with at least some GOP support be a House led by Speaker Nancy. Harry Reid may go down historically more than even Mitch McConnell as the man who single handily destroyed a majority of the Obama, "Hope for Change." But back to your point, Carville in my opinion at least is correct. At this point Dems should focus on holding seats they can and banking funds to 2016 run where GOP has many more Senate seats at risk and of course everyone in House is up. If economy finally has back turn now over due, Dems can blame GOP.
Rick Mathews Geoffrey - I am so thoroughly disgusted with Congress, should me wife permit such an action, I truly am considering a 2016 run for the House. I would lose but if nothing else perhaps I might awaken a superior candidates interest in running in the future trying to remind my Representative, 100% dedication to your principles which results in ZERO legislation benefiting your Constituents equals complete failure.
Rick Mathews More than one Democrat strategist has suggested best thing that could happen to party prior to 2016 is for GOP to take control of Senate. Then Dems can blame not only Bush W but current GOP led Congress for all the problems of country as 2016 Presidential Campaign develops. Voters memories are very, very short.
Rick Mathews With a 14% approval rating, anyone wish to lay odds that excluding those retiring, 95% of Congress will still manage to outspend their opponent into winning another term. Still wonder what Congress might actually accomplish if its composition reflected America's population with a majority being women, and both the ethnic and economic demographics of this nation represented appropriately?
Rick Mathews Frank - I harbor no ill will to President Obama nor am I disappointed in the accomplishments his Administration to date have succeeded in. I was a Green backer before the President had earned a spot on his H.S. Basketball squad. As importantly, I knew and none deny the passions of the Green Lobby carry substantial benefits not the least of which are donations. While Solar remains a bad bet, destroying the coal based utility industry at the cost of higher electric rates is to me a little too much too fast. As for Gay rights, I think you know my Lenten Devotion on, "Accept all People," actually went viral on internet for a couple days. Paul has not chance of becoming GOP version of President Obama. Peace out. www.voicesof.us
Rick Mathews Jerry: Great Link and while I commend study, I'm not convinced in particularly professional fields, men do not earn with equal tenure more the 7% the Women's Policy Research Institute notes. But as long as the "Passionate Ignore the Facts as Hyped by those running for office with ZERO intention of doing anything" young women will continue to be diverted into lower paying position and all society will suffer from not receiving maximum benefit of their abilities and resources.
Rick Mathews If I am a consultant and earn 70,000 annually working full time and my wife works as a teacher and earns 50,000 working full time, "Does anyone else recognize a problem claiming there is a gender wage gap between our incomes?" Yes, the U.S. Census from survey data - NOT IRS TAX RETURNS - compiled our national household income data and when you add up the incomes of all women working full time and all men working full time their is a MAJOR - 34% +/- 2.5% - income gap. Breakdown that gap to Public Sector employment with equal tenure and it drops to ZERO. Breakdown that gap for those a Union Card in the Private sector and it drops to ZERO. Now you actually understand why there is a Very Real Income Gender Gap Job Choice.
Rick Mathews Robert - "Dam nice to have you back, son." Paul in many ways gone from being a Champion Libertarian to a watered down Main Stream GOP "want-to-be Presidential contender," much as the God Green, Gay Rights, Immigration Reform Liberal Jr. Senator from Illinois who was elected to office in President Obama. Money talks and just as the President sold his ideals for Donations, Paul doesn't want to relive his father's legacy of being ultra popular with minority of America but never being able to accomplish anything let alone win the White House. There is a very good reason why 5 of last 6 GOP Presidents didn't win White House directly from there stay in Congress. Paul can't win but he could be fun. www.voicesof.us
Rick Mathews John - Please consider actually reading posts before commenting. Here is word for word what was written as you can verify reviewing original text, Having children once generated extra income to the lowest rungs in our society. That cycle has not been broken in even though in many states the number of under aged mouths to feed no longer guarantees extra food stamp assistance Yes, welfare rules to the credit of bi-partisan efforts signed in 90's by President Clinton which I know pre-dates your escape from public school. If you do not understand the #1 factor of poverty in America remains attempting to survive as a single mother, I really can't help you.
Rick Mathews David: Few dispute your suggestion is wise. The problem is where to put these children. With budget cuts, social services often find themselves victim of those who take in these types of children simply for the funding provided and actually abuse them worse than parents. There are of course untold people who open their homes to "court place" children and provide proper a living environment as possible. Having children once generated extra income to the lowest rungs in our society. That cycle has not been broken in even though in many states the number of under aged mouths to feed no longer guarantees extra food stamp assistance. Welcome to the poverty in America. An issue President Obama once cut his political teeth on.
Rick Mathews Laura: TY for bringing this tragic tale to PM. As a long-time subscriber to both Economist and Atlantic, I hope your work will grace both publications often. Peace be with you. www.voicesof.us
Rick Mathews Until SCOTUS all DIES, allowing a reversal of the "INSANITY" of the Citizens United decision restoring the Founding Father's intent that any man or women should have an opportunity to serve in government without selling themselves into slavery to finance campaigns base on corporate contributions, our Federal Government will never be Trust worthy. America was warned by President Eisenhower to be watchful for big money interests. A generation later President Carter made the same statement. We should have realized, "NOBODY can raise a Billion dollars during the worst recession since he Depression without selling out to somebody." Corporate America has absolute power owning White House, Senate and House. We all lost.
Rick Mathews Millennials have been "LIED" to from High School through College concerning Career Possibilities which left them holding a $1 Trillion in student loans and far too few positions they hoped for. Millennials fought for a decade in the Middle East and learned first hand, "War is Hell." Millennials have been "LIED" to by as noted a promise for "HOPE & CHANGE" that for whatever reason never materialized. Millennials have been "LIED" to by even those who do Employee them finding nominal value in effort as rewards continue to wane. If ever there was a generation who has 100% reason to distrust particularly the FEDERAL Government, it is the Millennial generation.
Rick Mathews Frank - Great question whose answer actually depends on if you wish to believe FBI or Anti-gun lobby. For once I trust the FBI. Particularly related to semi-automatic weapons and low cost European hand guns which have come to dominate professional ranks for usage in violence, there never was a potential for U.S. law engagement to prevent either. Yes, legally owned hand guns are often borrowed and sometimes stolen only to end up being used in shootings. But today's professional criminal doesn't want to even risk stealing a hand gun when they can get what they want shipped by UPS purchased online or through Canada or Mexico dealers who don't ask questions.
Rick Mathews Noah - At 1% after largest five year investment of "YOUR TAX DOLLARS" in American history, Solar Power is great for you and I but costs basically 500% what a gas electric plant produces energy for. Trust me, Utilities could care less about Solar. Now Wind Power is threatening non-renewable energy and actually putting coal plants out of business. Solar is great for green folks who want to get off Grid but "storage" of power remains central problem as does reality, size of facilities requires off sighting plants from need which further increases costs due to reduction of efficiency through line transmission.
Rick Mathews As everyone but "QUASI-INTELLECTUALS," understand from fifty years of murder statistics, death caused by legally purchased weapons has been and continues to be the minority in America's SMA's. Do accidents occur with "legally purchased" guns yes. Are crimes of passion with "legal weapons,' a problem for society, yes. But when reviewing gun use by America's criminal element, those weapons are stolen and or purchased outside any channel which can be regulated. None of above is reason for Chicago's Media to "wash" this rash of killings away from Public View. There is no excuse for Murder. May justice be served.
