Blacks Will Vote For Obama Despite Gay Marriage Stance

Impact

Ever since I was a little girl, I was taught that marriage is the union of one man and one woman under the sight of God. In the African American community, the church is the backbone of our culture, which means the average was raised in a household that upheld God’s Word.

Since President Obama endorsed same-sex marriage, many African American voters have questioned his decision. However, they aren’t withdrawing their support for our President.

That's why, the leadership of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church condemned a false online report that the denomination had withdrawn its support for  President Obama. Bishop Samuel Green Sr., president of the Council of Bishops, said that the AME denomination doesn’t endorse candidates nor are they affiliated with a group called the Coalition of African American Pastors, who are calling on African American pastors across the country to reject the president for his same-sex marriage support.

In general, African Americans who are also members of the LGBT community are looked down with unkind eyes by other African Americans. Though it happens in all races, you’re more likely to be treated like a leper by your own family if you’re an African American LGBT family member. More African Americans are coming around to the thought of same-sex marriage and relationships, but there’s still a long way to go.

Some have compared the LGBT Rights Movement to the Civil Rights Movement. There may be different facts, but the foundation for the movements are still the same. African Americans wanted equality during the Civil Rights Movement and all LGBT members want is to be treated equally. They’re people just like us, so why should they be denied anything? How can it be alright for some to have equal rights, but not for others?

What someone does in her or his personal life is no one’s business. As long as they’re not hurting anyone or being vulgar, what’s the problem? The country that lives as one nation under God will take prayer out of schools, but will ban same-sex marriage? You can’t live halfway from Him, but can’t play with Him like a Tonka truck.

I’m not sure if President Obama actually supports same-sex marriage, but he does support equality for all. Whether it was a political move or his personal views, we may never know. He’s simply supporting people's right  to make their own decisions. What’s wrong with that? I understand and respect that God deems homosexuality and lesbianism as a sin, but He told us to love and accept one another no matter what. I don’t care about race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. As long as you’re a good person, we can be the best of friends.

We’re not supposed to judge others for anything or any reason; we’re supposed to accept everyone just like Jesus did and let God handle the rest. God gave us free will to make our own choices, leaving it up to us to choose our own paths. Sure He wants us to and encourages us to make the right decisions and not the worldly decisions, but they’re still our decisions. God holds those who sin accountable and those who condemn sinners accountable. No one’s better than anyone else, so why turn your nose up?
