Dark Knight Rises Trailer: Anne Hathaway Talks Catwoman with Jimmy Fallon (+Video)

Friday night Anne Hathaway sat down on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to talk about The Dark Knight Rises, or more accurately to talk around The Dark Knight Rises.

Recently, Christian Nolan told CNN that Anne Hathaway had “nailed” the portrayal of legendary Catwoman, an essential character of the Batman trilogy that has been played in the past with success (Michelle Pfeiffer) and failure (Halle Berry).

“[Catwoman] is the most alive presence in the movie in the beginning, and she also helps draw Bruce Wayne (Batman) out of his shell. She's a breath of fresh air...and Anne Hathaway just nails the character, delightfully," Nolan said.

Catwoman’s strength and antagonism with Batman makes one wonder if she is the one who finally puts Batman out of his misery, in case Nolan had decided to kill his hero – as some have speculated. The rumor makes more sense if we follow the Batman films’ custom of including political commentary in the script. In the era of Occupy Wall Street, Catwoman would represent a galvanized 99% finally defeating Bruce Wayne/Batman who would represent the 1%.

Hathaway said it best when talking about the way she prepared for the role, and the things Catwoman represented. “She embodies the spirit of her era,” Hathaway said. And, in our era, outcast Catwoman may represent the struggle of the middle class. After all, the Dark Knight Rises has Catwoman purring to Bruce Wayne’s ear at some point in the movie: “You and your friends better batten down the hatches because when it hits, you're all going to wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”

Furthermore, Nolan told Access Hollywood how "he is done” with Batman when asked if there is hope for a new installemt in the future. However, the director seemed excited about the possibility of a Catwoman spin off with Hathaway in the leading part.

“Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform,” the director said. Adding that, “She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more.”
