24 Snarkiest Twitter Reactions to the Ann Romney You People Gaffe

Impact

Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, committed a gaffe on Thursday that many are comparing to French monarch Maria Antoinette’s infamous phrase “let them eat cake.”

While defending her husband’s decision to not release any additional tax records during an interview on Thursday morning, Romney said, “we’ve given all you people need to know” about [our] family’s financial records – in a remark that immediately became the Twitter hashtag #YouPeople.

Twitter users were offended by the term “you people,” as the expression has been historically used with an air of racism. And though some have defended the aspiring First Lady of the United States’ comments as nothing more than a casual expression, the remark is likely to worsen the scrutiny that the Romney campaign is facing – even from people from within his own party – to be as transparent as possible and release the rest of his tax records.

The “you people” remark may go down in history as the moment that cost Mitt Romney the election – or it may not. However, the incident is unfortnate for the Romney campaign, as Ann Romney was once considered as an asset for her husband's campaign.
