These Celebrities Are Saying #IDO to Marriage Equality — And They Want You to Do the Same

Ava DuVernay, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and countless other celebrities are saying #IDO to marriage equality.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Obergefell v. Hodges, a landmark case with the potential to extend the right to marry to same-sex couples across the country. As SCOTUS takes the next two months to deliberate, LGBT legal advocacy group, Lambda Legal, has recruited LGBT celebrities and allies to support marriage equality through its #IDO campaign.

"Even though we're on the verge of a marriage victory, the honeymoon is already over," Jim Bennett, the Midwest regional director for Lambda Legal told Mic. "Just like we saw in Indiana, we need people to say #IDO to stop our opponents from their religious 'refusal' laws. We need to say #IDO to the next generation that should be able to live loud and proud without being bullied for who they are. It's time to say #IDO for trans equality and for all the fights ahead until there's justice for all."

Next on the docket: Access to the more than 1,000 rights and benefits afforded to married couples is just the start. In conjunction with #IDO, Lambda Legal is also raising funds to continue its four-decade endeavor to bring equal rights to all LGBT Americans. Lambda Legal board of directors co-chair Karen Dixon and her partner Nan Schaffer plan to match #IDO donations up to $1 million to continue the legal fight for LGBT equality. The organization will use the funds to work on issues like senior housing discrimination and improving access to treatment for people with HIV.

As Dixon told the Huffington Post, "Even after we achieve marriage equality, our friends and family members can still be fired in 28 states for simply being who they are because their state has not enacted laws that tell employers and landlords that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal."
