Carly Rae Jepsen Sex Tape: XXX Scandal is the Oldest Trick in the Book

Culture

“Call me Maybe” singer, Carly Rae Jepsen, is the latest in an ever growing list of relatively unknown and talentless female entertainers who jump to notoriety thanks to the “shock” of suddenly finding themselves involved in nude pictures and/or video "scandals."

Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Minka Kelly are some of the most recent examples of this trend that seeks to earn lots of free publicity by virtue of “shock value.”

Hilton, the infamous socialite and heiress to the Hilton hotel empire, made headlines in 2003 when a sex tape (which later ended up being commercialized under the title A Night in Paris) surfaced – coincidentally – shortly before the premiere of her reality television show The Simple Life

Kardashian followed suit in 2007 when a sex tape she made with singer Ray J. in 2003 surfaced, bringing her attention and helping her to eventually land a contract for her family’s reality television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

And right before Rae Jepsen, actress Minka Kelly was also involved in a sex tape scandal when celebrity-gossip site TMZ uncovered a tape that Kelly supposedly made when she was still a minor.

However, the most recent controversy threatens to suck up all the attention that starlets' sex tapes can get this season, as the 27-year-old Canadian singer has become a fixture in radio and social media thanks to her infamously catchy summer tune “Call me Maybe” -- and an upcoming duet with the king of social media, Justin Bieber. So, regardless of the veracity of this latest sex tape, the controversy surrounding it has already served its purpose: launching the career or yet another starlet. The question is, will we remember who Carly Rae Jepsen is by next summer?
