The Badass Women of the ESPYs Make the Best Case Against Red Carpet Dresses

Impact

There's a reason "red carpet dresses" rolls off the tongue far more easily than "red carpet pants" — because for so long, dresses have been the default fashion option for women to dress up.

But looking glamorous doesn't require a dress, or a skirt; in fact, as we were reminded at the 2015 ESPYs, pants are the latest red carpet trend for badass women everywhere.

The occasional pantsuit on the red carpet isn't wholly new (Emma Watson "wore it best" at the 2014 Golden Globes), and jumpsuits have been cresting as an overall fashion craze. But as the norm on the red carpet, not the exception? The ESPYs proved it's possible.

From members of the U.S. women's national soccer team to models like Chrissy Teigen, the women walking the red carpet demonstrated that wide-legged trousers, skinny cigarette pants and full-on jumpsuits are not only sexy, but that looking stylish doesn't mean giving up comfort. As pants aficionado Tilda Swinton said at a red carpet event this week, she chooses "pure function [instead of fashion]... I tend to wear clothes by my friends and [choose] comfort every time."

Bow down to the pants-wearing, fast-moving, no-fucks-giving women of the ESPYs red carpet.
