50 Shades of Grey Movie Cast: How Ryan Gosling and Emma Watson Would Play the Opening Scene

Culture

After endless speculation surrounding who should be cast for the main roles of the film version of E.L. James’ erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, there seems to be broad consensus over actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Watson as the most appropriate choices to play sexually dominant tycoon Christian Grey and innocent student Anastasia Steel – respectively.

Watson, who recently acknowledged for the first time in public the rumors surrounding her potential participation in the upcoming movie would lend big screen Steel all the innocence and candor that made her a staple of the Harry Potter film series – where she played Hermione Granger. Watson, as Steel, would open the movie with a close up of her beautiful and make up-free face assessing herself in front of the mirror when she’s about to meet Grey for the first time in the swanky and intimidating head quarters of Grey Enterprises Holdings Inc.

Gosling, on the other hand, would be Watson’s yang, as he would perfectly incarnate Grey’s obscure and sexually intense energy as both the young student and the CEO meet for Steel’s school newspaper interview. Besides good looks, Gosling can provide the gravitas he showed in The Ides of March to seduce and involve the inexperienced Steel in his luxurious and secretive lifestyle – including the infamous “Red Room of Pain/Pleasure.”

However, the movie hasn’t been cast yet. And though both Gosling and Watson would probably be delighted to be part of what it’s already building up to be the film event of the decade, they do face stiff competition from a host of A-list actors who also have been mentioned for the roles – including Matt Bommer, Michael Fassbender, and Mila Kunis and Rooney Mara (who, having previously worked with producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, has an edge in Fifty Shades' upcoming casting process.
