Ten major league baseball teams, 10 different field positions and a whole lot of laughs. That's the lineup for Ferrell Takes the Field, an HBO documentary special starring funnyman Will Ferrell, shot in March during spring training in Arizona.

The comedy special, which 47-year-old Ferrell produced and Brian McGinn directed, is slated to air Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10:00 pm EDT on HBO. The trailer for the film, released Monday, shows Ferrell wearing several different uniforms and making a stirring speech about how he brought "passion to the field, dedication, ability and a lot of ignorance."

"When I embarked on this journey, I thought to myself, 'Could I do it?'" Ferrell reflects. The trailer depicts the actor on various fields throwing pitches, batting and, at one point, holding a sign calling out a player for his good looks.

"My career has not gone according to plan. When I first showed up on the A's doorstep, I thought I'd be an A for life. But then I was a Mariner, and then a Red, a Diamondback, an Angel, a Cub, a White Sock, a Padre, a Dodger," Ferrell says.

The film was made in partnership with Major League Baseball and Funny Or Die, Ferrell's Emmy-winning comedy production company, and was dedicated to the charity Cancer for College, which provides college scholarships to cancer survivors.

In typical Ferrell fashion, the documentary is full of quips and humor. "They say nothing's more American than grabbing a hot dog, heading to the ballpark and watching nine guys from the Dominican Republican make magic on the field," Ferrell says in the trailer. "But you know what? Today I learned, they are wrong. Make that eight Dominicans, and one guy from Irvine, California."

Ferrell most recently starred opposite Kristen Wiig in A Deadly Adoption, a Lifetime melodrama about a couple living with the mother of the child they plan to adopt.
