Miley Cyrus Slams Nicki Minaj Over Her Reaction to 2015 MTV VMA Snub

Culture

Just as the dust seems to have finally be settled on the Nicki Minaj-Taylor Swift Twitter Feud of 2015, one more pop star has added her own opinion to the mix: Miley Cyrus.

"What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind," Cyrus told the New York Times in an interview published Friday.

Cyrus, who will host the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, said she didn't think Minaj's action were "very polite" after Swift assumed a tweet Minaj sent out lambasting MTV for nominating videos that "celebrate women with very slim bodies" was actually a dig at Swift's video nomination. The two swapped some heated messages as the Internet quickly declared it a blowout.

"It's not very polite," Cyrus told the New York Times of the exchange. "I think there's a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don't have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn't even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you've just given E! News 'Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It.'"

The 22-year-old artist, who admits she doesn't follow celebrity controversy or even own cable TV, argued Minaj simply went about it the wrong way.

"If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement," she said. "I don't respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. And it's not anger like, 'Guys, I'm frustrated about some things that are a bigger issue.' You made it about you. Not to sound like a bitch, but that's like, 'Eh, I didn't get my VMA.'"

Cyrus agreed Minaj was right to point out problems surrounding race and body image in pop culture. But, she disagreed with Minaj's decision to make an enormous and important topic all about her:

If you want to make it about race, there's a way you could do that. But don't make it just about yourself. Say: "This is the reason why I think it's important to be nominated. There's girls everywhere with this body type." .. I know you can make it seem like, Oh I just don't understand because I'm a white pop star. I know the statistics. I know what's going on in the world. But to be honest, I don't think MTV did that on purpose.

Having said that, Cyrus admitted she is "probably the most disconnected host in history" and doesn't have a preference over who wins the award for video of the year.

Now that the host of the awards show being discussed ad nauseam has reignited the fire underneath this hot debate, only one thing can be sure: 2015's VMAs on Sunday at 9 p.m. EST are sure to have some surprises in store.
