The Dark Knight rises has been dethroned and The Bourne Legacy is the new number one film in the country. This weekend, Bourne opened to an estimated $40.3 million in the United States and Canada, landing it in the number one spot.

In the number two spot, Will Ferrel demonstrated he can still carry a movie: The Campaign raked in $27.4 million. The Dark Knight Rises fell to the number three spot. Domestically Christopher Nolan's film has grossed $390.1 million in four weeks, putting it about $50 million behind where the previous Dark Knight film stood its fourth weekend.

Hollywood for its part is breathing a sigh of relief that it was a financially successful weekend at the movies: There has been a dramatic lull in movie going throughout the summer.

This week, a new crop of movies will try their hand at box office gold. On Wednesday, Jennifer Garner's new family film The Odd Life of Timothy Green hits theaters. A Walt Disney film, Timothy Green follows a couple unable to have children yet who discover a little boy who seemingly grew from their gareden, who they then raise as their child.

On Friday, the box office will be hit with a triumverate of movies which will be seen as much for their cinematic value as for the scandals in which their starts are embroiled. Cosmopolis, a futuristic film based off of the Dan DeLillo novel, comes out in limited release and is Robert Pattinson's first film since his highly public relationship drama with fellow Twilight star Kristen Stewart.

Another film to look forward to this Friday is the action-packed The Expendables 2, which stars Sylvester Stallone and tabloid-darling Liam Hemsworth. Coming two years after the 2010 The Expendables, the flick promises to fill the void for the action movie of the moment.

Also to be released Friday is Sparkle, a film about a Motown girl group's rise to musical fame The movie, which stars American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, also stars Whitney Houston and is the last film project she worked on before her death.

For more off the beaten path flicks, Friday is also the release date for Robot & Frank a futuristic indie flick about an elderly man/former jewel thief who makes the robot who is meant to look after him into his bank robbing accomplice. The film stars, Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Finally, another kids' movie comes with the release of ParaNorman, an animated movie about a misunderstood little boy who can speak with zombies, ghosts, and the dead.

With all these films hitting theaters this week, which one can we expect to steal the number one title from The Bourne Legacy?
