Skippy Peanut Butter Recall: Full List of States and Expiration Dates Affected

It's a sad day for PB&J fans across the United States: A number of Skippy peanut butter jars are being voluntarily recalled by its manufacturer, Hormel Foods, for containing possible metal pieces. The recall consists of 153 cases, or 1,871 pounds, of the Skippy reduced fat peanut butter spread, according to a Food and Drug Administration notice published Thursday.

The metal components were noticed during a routine in-line magnet check of the peanut butter. According to the FDA notice, "Foodborne objects that are greater than 7mm in length may cause injury such as severe choking with airway obstruction, gastrointestinal peroration or secondary infection." 

The recalled products were shipped to Publix, Target and Walmart throughout Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas. Each jar with possible metal shavings includes an expiration date that reads "DEC1416LR1" and a package UPC code of 37600-10500, found at the top of the lid.

According to a notice on Skippy's website, "If a consumer has this product, they should return it to the store where purchased for an exchange or call Hormel Foods Customer Relations at (866) 475-4779, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time, excluding holidays."
