University of California Merced Stabbing: Campus Closed After Five Students Stabbed

Classes were canceled at University of California's Merced campus Wednesday when authorities reported five students were stabbed, and the alleged suspect was fatally shot by officers in the morning.

The university posted a series of tweets following its initial alert of the stabbing at 8 a.m. Pacific, followed by several updates and an announcement of a press conference about the incident that will take place 4 p.m. Pacific.

"Five students were injured and a suspect is deceased after a stabbing incident on the University of California, Merced, campus this morning (Nov. 4)," according to a press release posted Wednesday by the university. "The suspect was shot by police and later died from his injuries, according to the UC Merced Police Department."

The press release also provided a crisis number — (209) 228-4266 — for students struggling to cope with the event.

The updates provided from the university indicates all students treated for stabbing wounds are conscious, although authorities haven't said whether the suspect was a student as well.
