South African comedian and host of The Daily Show Trevor Noah was hospitalized for an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday morning, according to Comedy Central.

"We're happy to report the procedure went well and he is currently recuperating from the surgery," read a statement from Comedy Central published to The Daily Show's Twitter account and Facebook page

Comedy Central said it planned to air an "encore" to fill Wednesday night's episode of The Daily Show, and expected Noah to return to work Thursday.

After news hit, some Twitter users took issue with Comedy Central's decision to bring Noah back as early as Thursday.

Noah replaced comedian Jon Stewart as host of the Comedy Central show in August, ending Stuart's 15-year-long stint as host of the comedy news show.
