Tom Daley Gay Rumors: Diver Wants Gold in Rio 2016

Culture

18-year-old British diver Tom Daley, who won bronze in the London 2012 Olympics to become an instant sensation both loved and hated in the UK, told the Evening Standard he’ll be ready to go for gold in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. "I'll be at my peak then," assured the diver.

Daley, who received encouragement from David Beckham and congratulations from One Direction, has become a celebrity in the UK with hordes of fans screaming, paparazzi flashing shots at him and people asking for autographs. On the flip side, he's also faced Twitter hate as well as malicious speculation about his sexuality.

But the talented athlete has what it takes to brush all the rumors aside and focus back in the  competition. So far, he seems to have the right attitude by setting a golden goal for Rio 2016 – as well as by predicting the end of Chinese domination in diving. This shows a focused and driven young man on his way to the top.

However, as indicated by his mom when she declared that Daley “hasn’t had a proper girlfriend,” the diver could also fall prey of attention and celebrity -- with the potential downside of setting his priorities wrong and giving modeling contracts and other perks of celebrity more weight than to the platform. This would be a shame, as it'd deprive the UK from a potentially legendary Olympian for decades to come.
