Henry Cavill in Man of Steel Movie: We Want a Wonder Woman Movie, Not Another Superman Reboot

Culture

With all the hype around the highly anticipated Man of Steel movie, one question has been buzzing in the back of my mind; where’s Wonder Woman?

The super heroine is making a splash on the cover the DC Comics’ Superman reboot, as the two super powers are shown midair locked in a tight embrace. The kiss comes as a big shocker for fans of Superman who wonder if this new relationship means the end of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, or if it’s just a fluke. As intriguing as all the speculation is around Superman’s love life, what’s way more interesting is the other woman in his life.

As one of the most recognizable figures in the world, Wonder Woman flies high as feminist icon and arbiter of justice. An Amazonian warrior, Wonder Woman was sent to fight against inequality and promote peace among men, and it’s about time that she gets equal screen time of her own.

For years, there have been rumors of a Wonder Woman movie in production. However, multiple failed attempts have kept her amazing, action packed story from hitting the screen. While I don’t want to make accusations of sexism because that’s just inflammatory, I do think it’s worth mentioning that out of over 35 movies based on comics made in the last 10 years, eight featured women as part of the ensemble cast (and I’m talking about women who help save the world, not ones who are just helpless) while only two featured them as the lead hero. Hmmm, something doesn’t quite add up here.

Granted, there aren’t that many female superheroes in comics to begin with, and the last two films that were led by woman didn’t do so well at the box office. That said, it still doesn’t seem fair that the same superheroes come back to life on the big screen time and time again even after failing at box office, while woman get one shot to get it right –– if they even get the chance.

Women are more powerful than ever, making strides in business, politics, and all over the place. With all of this progress, it would be nice for a phenomenal female like Wonder Woman to shine on the big screen, representing all the wonderful women out there already.
