Swift's 1989 debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 when it was first released in October 2014 and had "the largest sales week for an album since 2002." After only one week on sale, 1989 became "the second-largest-selling album of 2014, behind only the Frozen soundtrack, according to Billboard.

1989 received largely positive reviews from critics. Rolling Stone wrote that is was "deeply weird, feverishly emotional, wildly enthusiastic," and that "1989 sounds exactly like Taylor Swift, even when it sounds like nothing she's ever tried before."
