Oscars News: Heath Ledger's Academy Award Will Go to His Daughter Someday

Heath Ledger became only the second actor in history to win an Oscar posthumously when he was awarded an Academy Award for best supporting actor in 2009, after his death at age 28.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, confirmed that Heath Ledger's Oscar statuette will go to his daughter Matilda someday.

"At the end of the day, everything is there for Matilda, and when she can take possession of it, it's all hers," Ledger said.

Matilda, now 10 years old, currently lives with her mother, actress Michelle Williams. Until she takes charge of her father's Oscar, it will remain at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, Australia.

Heath Ledger's father also reflected on the ceremony during which his son was awarded the Oscar. "Bittersweet is probably the best way I can describe that night," Kim Ledger told the Hollywood Reporter.

Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of the sleep aid Ambien and other prescription medication in 2008.

"It was only a year and a month since his passing. We hadn't got our heads around the tragedy of losing him," Kim Ledger said, "but at the same time, he was receiving such accolades for what he knew was his best work."
