The Weeknd truly earned that nomination and his spot on the Oscars stage — no thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey, the film he actually wrote his breakout hit "Earned It" for.

Surrounded by seductive dancers, violinists and aerial silk acrobat, the Weeknd nailed his performance of his hit song. The fan's appraisal: His performance was far more enjoyable than the film that first introduced it to audiences.

The success of "Earned It" marks a major moment in the Weekend's transition from obscure R&B artist to pop star. It was his first single to crack the top five on Billboard's Hot 100. It helped open the door for his first No. 1, "Can't Feel My Face," which he recently performed at the Grammys.

"Earned It" is so good, it actually earned Fifty Shades of Grey an Oscar nomination, a fact Twitter had a field day with.

"Earned It" it faces stiff competition in the best original song category from Lady Gaga's "'Til It Happens to You" and Sam Smith's "Writing's on the Wall."
