This Oscars Montage Just Skewered the Hell Out of the Oscars' All-White Acting Nominees

Impact

After a whirlwind monologue in which he spoke about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy at length, 2016 Academy Awards host Chris Rock introduced a pretaped segment that satirized the fact that, for the second year in a row, all the acting nominations were awarded to white actors.

"If you're a black actor, just getting the opportunity to be in a movie can be a struggle," he said.

The series of sketches opened with the footage from the David O. Russell film Joy. After a short clip from the actual movie, Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg, who earlier in the night was mistaken for Oprah Winfrey, appeared digitally in the movie and harangued Jennifer Lawrence's character for not knowing how to sell a mop.

The camera then cuts to the scene of Leonardo DiCaprio getting mauled by a bear in The Revenant. However, it's not a bear who's mauling DiCaprio, it's Saturday Night Live's Leslie Jones, bemoaning the fact that the movie has an all-white (and all-male) cast.

Tracy Morgan took over Eddie Redmayne's Oscar-nominated role in The Danish Girl, but it was a slightly more pastry-based plot.

And finally, Rock put himself in The Martian, this time with Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig in on the joke. In this situation, NASA doesn't seem too interested in making sure Rock, a black astronaut, comes back home. He asks Wiig if they'll be able to get him home.

When Daniels tells Wiig that it will cost $2,500, she's hesitant.

And they have this conversation in front of Rock — while he's stuck in space.

The montage was more than hysterical — it was poignant. It's no secret that #OscarsSoWhite points to a systemic problem that talks about opportunities for people of color in Hollywood, which, unfortunately, are still not as plentiful as they should be.
