Dustin Lance Black Took Down Sam Smith in More Ways Than One With This Tweet

Impact

On Sunday night, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black took to Twitter to remind fans and audiences that he's still here and he's still queer.

Black's tweet was an incensed response to comments made by singer Sam Smith during his Oscar's acceptance speech in which Smith suggested he was the first out gay man to win an Academy Award.

Since his 2009 Oscar for for best original screenplay (Milk), Black has become most famous for his engagement to British Olympic diver Tom Daley. In a tweet Black suggested that not only was Smith trying to muscle in on the honor of being the first out gay man to win an Oscar, but also Black's fiancé.

"If you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé," said Black in one of the better smackdowns of the night. He linked to his own emotional acceptance speech in 2009.

Though Smith's win for Writing's on the Wall in the best original song category came as a surprise, it was his remark during his acceptance speech that raised the most eyebrows. Smith apparently misinterpreted a quote by fellow out performer Sir. Ian McKellen, suggesting that no out gay man had ever won an Oscar. In addition to Black, Sir Elton John, Stephen Sondheim and Bill Condon are just a few of the other out stars to have taken the top prize before Smith.

Smith's self-congratulation was especially stark given that fellow best song nominee, Anohni, did make history as the first trans person ever nominated for an Oscar.

In addition to Black's scalding smackdown, Twitter piled on as well, with ruthless mockery.
