A letter to J.K. Rowling from the mother of a girl with cancer went viral this week. Chrissy Hart, whose daughter died not long after Hart wrote the letter, expressed her gratitude to the author for creating the world of Harry Potter. The series, she said, had been a source of inspiration for the girl throughout her illness.

"You taught her that for every chemo she has to go through, there will be the opportunity to fly across a lake on a hippogriff," wrote Hart, according to the BBC. "For every time her heart seizes with fear of pain, there will be me chasing it away with a Patronus Charm."

Hart's words first came to light Saturday evening, when actress Ellie Bamber read the letter aloud at Letters Live in London, a series that features celebrated actors like Ian McKellen and Benedict Cumberbatch reading letters from across the centuries. Hart's missive went viral when Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley posted an excerpt to Instagram, captioning it "one of the most beautiful letters I've ever read."

I write to you as a mother, a Mummy, of a beautiful little girl. I'm sure you hear people tell you all the time that your words, your imagination helped them, or their children, in some way. Maybe they were helped out of depression by your works, maybe they drew strength from the knowledge that Neville grew up to be a hero against all odds, maybe you taught a bookish boy that there are friends to be found between the pages of a novel.
