One Direction Wins Best Pop and Most Shareable Video at the MTV Video Music Awards

One Direction has taken home the 2012 MTV VMA Best Pop Video as well as the Most Shareable Video, according to EnStars.  

After facing stiff competition in the category from the likes of Justin Bieber and Rihanna, the British boyband prevailed.

One Direction (1D) and The Wanted are two of the most popular English exports vying to invade and conquer hysterical teenagers from coast to coast of the United States.

Formed in London, in 2010, by members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, One Direction placed seventh in the British musical competition The X Factor. Known in the United States for the Justin Bieber-esque “What Makes you Beautiful,” One Direction’s most important gig yet was at the London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. They will also perform at the upcoming MTV VMAs.

One Direction’s rivals, The Wanted, were formed in 2009 by members Max George, Nathan Sykes, Tom Parker, Jay McGuiness and Siva Kaneswaran. They also have started to have success across the pond with the 2012 hit single “Glad You Came,” which is a departure from the often sentimental boy band sound; embracing a more dance and global sound – reminiscent of Bob Sinclair’s 2006 hit “World Hold On (Children of the Sky)” – which is sure to propel the band into dance floors from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo. But, is The Wanted equipped to follow up on international stardom or will they be another “one hit wonder” summer band?
