10 Reasons Every Student is Excited to Go Back to School This Year

Impact

1. Election Year: This is an exciting time to be a college student! Most of us can vote in the upcoming election, and many more will be first time voters. Many millennials are well read in what is going on in the political world today, which makes this year a great one for students. We love to Rock the Vote, and casting our ballots will be an essential part of how the elections go this year.

2. The End of Election Year:

Although election season is fun for some students, for others, it is one of the worst times of the year. You have political groups around campus harassing you to sign up and volunteer all the time. So, it is time to rejoice! Once November 6th passes, you will have the remainder of this year with out fretting about voting for Romney or Obama. One of them will just be your president.

3. Pell Grants:

As our college debt piles on, we have to enjoy having one more year of federal financial aid. Pell Grants have been a hot topic in Congress, and many are calling for cuts on this and other forms on financial aid. This isn’t the first time that attempts have been made, but we have seen them slowly change the requirements and make more and more student depend on private loans to make it through college.

4. We Get to Use our Brains Again:

If you weren’t busy saving the world this summer, chances are you were probably sitting around watching an obscene amount of television. It will be refreshing for many of us to step away from the tube and sit it on a lecture. There is a chance that we may learn something new.

5. New Adventures:

This is one of the best times of our lives! We have all our futures ahead of us. We are away from home (most of us, at least), there are infinite opportunities for what we can do, and there are new people to meet. There are new dorms, apartments, roommates, and plenty of potential to create memories that will last a lifetime. Don’t let time escape you.

6. Sports:

College sports are awesome. For any student that has even the tiniest amount of pride in their school, it is hard not to get caught up in the madness. We get to see some of the best athletes in the country playing for the sake of the game, and a few titles along the way. With many of last year’s greats now drafted, we will see new talent make their way to the top this year.

7. Early Classes:

Who doesn’t love a good trek across campus for an 8:30 a.m. class? You will probably love it even more when you are running to it at 8:50 a.m. in a few weeks when you get over being on time. All the early morning slumps, crazy runs across campus, and embarrassing moments you have when you bust into class still in your PJs are just another part of being a college student.

8. Real and Interesting Conversations:

There is a world of interesting people around you, so take advantage. Have genuine conversations with people form different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and ideas. College is a time for growth and reflection, and every new year is a new chance to accomplish this.

9. Taking some time off from Mom and Dad:

Everyone loves their parents (and home cooked meals), but the time to fly away from the nest is crucial so that we learn how to be functional and successful adults in society. That won’t happen if mom is still doing your laundry and making your bed. There is also the added benefit of not having a curfew, not having to ask for permission, and all the other fun stuff that comes with being on your own.

10. It Could be Our Last School Year Ever:

The end of the Mayan calendar is approaching us. This could just be another Y2K episode where we laugh it off. Regardless of what you believe, the Apocalypse 2012 theme makes for some great parties, interesting conversations, and another reason for why we may just have to live it up this year.
