Kindle Update 2016: Update Your Kindle Soon or It'll Lose Internet Connection

Impact

Amazon Kindle owners: Make sure your device is updated before Tuesday or it will lose its internet connection. Amazon recently issued a warning for its e-reader customers on its site.

While Kindles usually update themselves periodically when connected to the internet, if your Kindle has been lying around in some crevice (perhaps getting neglected in favor of your tablet), it may be at risk. This issue only applies to Kindles made before 2012; newer models don't need the update to stay connected.

Here are the devices affected: 2012 Kindle Paperwhite fifth generation; 2009 Kindle DX second generation; 2010 Kindle Keyboard third generation; and all generations of regular Kindles from 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

According to Amazon, if you have one of those Kindles and do not update it by Tuesday, the following message will appear on your screen: "Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again."

This means you'll need to manually install the software. Check out Amazon's help page for its tablets and e-readers to learn how to do that.
