Donald Trump Tweets About Brussels Terror Attacks, Makes Bombings About US Politics

Impact

Following a series of explosions across Brussels Tuesday that killed at least 34 and injured at least 230, United States GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump managed to make the terrorist attacks about American politics. Trump tweeted early Thursday that Brussels was no longer safe and predicted the same fate for the U.S. if the country is not "vigilant and smart."

"Do you remember how beautiful and safe a place Brussels was?" Trump posted in a tweet that was deleted shortly after. "Not anymore, it is different world! U.S. must be vigilant and smart!"

Many social media users tweeted disapproval of Trump's apparent lack of sympathy for the victims and attempt to make the attack about something other than the victims:

Multiple reports confirmed two explosions went off in Brussels Zaventem airport and another at the Maalbeek Metro station. Belgium's federal prosecutor said the explosions were triggered by a suicide bomber. Reuters reported hours after the blast that the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS, had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The explosion at Maalbeek station in the heart of Brussels occurred during rush hour and killed at least 15 people, according to some reports, and injured at least 55 more. Brussels park, surrounded by the Royal Palace of Brussels, the Belgian parliament and the U.S. embassy, was evacuated in the wake of the attacks, according to Bloomberg Business
