Mitt Romney's Speech Last Night: Transcript of the Speech He Should Have Given, But Did Not

Impact

There was once a day when all Americans held these truths to be self evident that,

We the people of these United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

I do not know when America disavowed her support for the principles on which our Founding Fathers brought forth this great nation. Nor will I point any finger of blame toward any within this country for this development. But with God as my witness, I promise you I will fight until my dying breath to defeat this mounting epidemic of apathy sweeping across this great land.

My question to all who contend America can no longer overcome her perceived internal difficulties is, when have the people of these United States ever failed to overcome any obstacle?”

I contend, these United States of America have been and remain the most blessed country on Earth.

For those who claim America can no longer govern herself, I state, pick up a history book and learn how magnificent was the wisdom of our Founding Father’s system of checks and balances which allowed this country to overcome internal debate which throughout history would have torn apart any other country.

We have fought a Civil War yet developed a nation of even greater unity.

We have fought in Two World Wars to defend those we call allies.

We have fought to protect our elders developing Social Security and Medicare while ending discrimination amongst our citizens based on gender to racial diversity.

For those who contend America has lost its way, please step aside unless you wish to bring something constructive to our most pressing debates. I call on all America to renew our fight to preserve our founding Father’s charge to never cease to attempt to create a more perfect Union.

Make no mistake, there will be a cost born by all to ensure future generations will benefit from the sacrifices we must undertake today. The great communicator President Ronald Reagan noted, “Government cannot create wealth, all it can do is redistribute it.”

President Reagan understood, it was the Lord himself who blessed this great nation with our abundant natural resources. It was God himself who called forth upon this great nation the gathering of its populous whose remarkable achievements continue to make it the shining light of hope across the globe.

America must unite in common cause. We must agree there can be a new day in America where through hard work, sacrifice and cooperation, this nation can emerge fiscally sound and re-energized.

No matter whom you elect to lead this country, his leadership will be tested in developing the bi-partisan support necessary to deal with our mounting fiscal crisis regarding issues from the tax code to our entitlement programs. The solution to these issues will not come from solely a blue or red platform but represent the most effective solutions drawn from all resources available. That fact is one I learned in business and my work in the public sector.

Yet only a great fool believes that repeating the actions of the past which failed will produce alternative results. I am not a great fool. Just as you understand you cannot borrow your way out of debt, I understand, only through reform and growth can America put her fiscal house in order.

The task of growing the American economy is daunting yet once again you have built a platform for success. Over the past several years, what many have deemed a miracle has been occurring.

Today our nation benefits from decade low prices of natural gas, decade high levels of production of oil and hundreds of thousands of jobs created in an industry that didn’t exist.

American ingenuity has placed this nation at a similar cross-roads to that which propelled her to global economic dominance from the development of our oil industry in the early 1900’s. Today, our nation which once amazed the world putting a man on the moon, stands positioned to become energy independent within a decade.

We can become:

Independent to no longer be held hostage to ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Independent to end our half trillion per year trade deficits with foreign oil producers.

Independent to end being forced to put our military in harms way simply to satisfy our need for oil.

Yet becoming energy independent does not involve simply abandoning our obligations to be responsible stewards of the natural resources we have been blessed with. We will be creating tens of thousands of new jobs ensuring our quest is done in an environmentally prudent method. Becoming energy independent will require upgrading our means of transmitting energy whether by pipelines electric grid.

The cost of investing in infra-structure will be substantial yet its benefits will last generations. As an example, it has been estimated that upgrading our power grid by 5% will result in the equivalent reduction of pollutants produced of eliminating 50 million cars from our highways.

A quarter century ago, President Ronald Reagan called upon you to realize, “It was morning in America.” His vision for your nation’s future revolved around his faith in you as a nation.

I too share that faith. A faith that you recognize that all great generations made sacrifices allowing the next generation to benefit from their difficult choices. A faith that you have already begun what history will record as the next great technological evolution in America which will lead to ten million new jobs created within a decade and result in our energy independence.

Our Founding Fathers believe in the future, “We the people” could create.

With your vote and God’s blessing, there is nothing we cannot accomplish together.
