This 6-Year-Old Girl Had the Best Reaction After Finding Out Her Dad Is Transitioning

A 6-year-old's reaction to her father's transition is going viral on Facebook. Shalee Olivia Ellis' recorded her oldest daughter Layla's response to learning that her father is now a transgender woman named Mallory. According to BuzzFeed, the married couple resides in Pennsylvania with their two young children.

"I have been asked several times about how Layla responded to being told about her dad being transgender," Ellis wrote in the Facebook post. "I turned my camera on halfway through the conversation, and this is what ensued." The video, Ellis says, is from January.

"Daddy's a she now?" Layla can be seen in the video asking incredulously. When Ellis asks how this discovery makes her feel, the child responds, "Good!" After Ellis tells her daughter that her father is transitioning, Layla says, "Daddy, I love you so much, even though you're a her, I still love you."

"This video proves that hatred is a learned trait," Ellis told BuzzFeed. "If we as adults can change the way we talk about individuals who identify as transgender, then we have an opportunity to take a bite out of transphobia and discrimination against trans people with the upbringing of a generation that loves their fellow man unconditionally — regardless of any physical descriptors."

The parents have also created a Facebook page titled Team Shallory.

A recent study found that kids who identify as openly transgender and are surrounded by a loving supportive family, are no more susceptible to anxiety or depression than kids who aren't transgender. As the aforementioned study, and 6-year-old Layla prove, being supportive of family members who identify as transgender, should know no age limit.
