50 Shades of Grey Movie Cast: Matt Bomer is Not too Gay to Play Christian Grey (VIDEO)

A few weeks ago, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis, who had been relentlessly bidding himself to be the screenwriter of Fifty Shades of Grey the movie, stepped into controversy when his tweets weighed on the ongoing casting speculation about the upcoming film.

Ellis, whose offer was declined by Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James, said White Collar’s Matt Bomer, who has figured among the favorites to be cast as Christian Grey, wouldn’t be a good idea for the role because he is openly gay and is married to his male partner.

Besides coming across as a sore loser for not clinching the screenwriting job, Ellis appeared to be throwing Bomer under the bus – now that the picture of LGBT rights in America is slowly improving, and openly gay actors are no longer typecast.

Furthermore, Ellis also comes across as hypocritical because – unlike Bomer – he has not “come out” as gay even though he’s made ambiguous statements in the past regarding his sexuality.

And, though we still think Gangsters Squad’s Ryan Gosling, Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill or True Blood’s Aleksander Skarsgard will be cast a Christian Grey, we are here to tell Ellis that Bomer could play the CEO of Grey Enterprises as well or better than PolicyMic’s trifecta. What matters are his acting skills, not his sexuality.

Nor should a heterosexual actor be discounted from playing a gay role solely based on his or her sexuality. But don’t take my word for it. Check out Modern Family’s beloved gay father Cam, who is successfully played by heterosexual actor Eric Stonestreet.
