Ruby Rose of 'Orange Is the New Black' Opened up About Her Depression on Instagram

Ruby Rose is upfront about a lot of things, including her history of depression. Over the weekend, the Australian model-slash-musician-slash-actress posted a 3-year-old tweet, sent to her by a fan, in which she had declared that she was "losing her battle with depression." Sharing a screen cap of the tweet on Instagram, Rose took the opportunity to send her fans a hopeful message.

"I had hit rock bottom," she wrote in her Instagram post. "I couldn't find happiness anywhere ... I thought I had failed at being a human being [and] adult."

Rose took off for the U.S., she said, spending nearly everything she had on an "overpriced" rehabilitation center and signing herself up for therapy. She was trying to save her life — she never anticipated what that life would become.

"I chose to fight, and I thought it meant I'd be able to live," she continued. "I DIDN'T think it meant I'd be able to live my dream. I DIDN'T think it would result in this extraordinary life I get to be a part of now. It just makes me wonder how many others are days, hours, seconds away from realizing their worth ... And once the dark cloud is lifted will be truly happy and free."

On Saturday, squad maven Taylor Swift presented Rose with the Stephen F. Kolzak award at the 27th annual GLAAD media awards. The distinction goes to an LGBTQ member of the entertainment industry "who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance."

"It's so interesting to receive an award for visibility, because for such a large part of my life, I just wanted to be invisible," Rose said in her speech. "I felt there was so much wrong with me and there was so much weird about me," she continued, explaining that, because she didn't adhere to gender norms, she had been "stalked, verbally abused and beaten until I was hospitalized."

"I dreamt of being a famous singer or an actor who, through my work, could inspire others to be themselves or hang in there," she said. 

Looks like she's made it: Comments on her Instagram post include, "This is amazing. Thank you @rubyrose I appreciate this!!" and "This is so touching. Thank you, you're such an inspiration," and many users tagging their friends with messages of support that basically said, "She did it — and so can you."
