It may come as a complete shock, but you've probably been tying your shoes wrong your entire life.

Most of the shoelace wearing public learn what Adam Sandler's character in Big Daddy christened the "loop it, swoop it, pull."

The process is spelled out below by the Washington State School for the Blind:

Basically this is all well and good, but as Terry Moore, director of the Radius Foundation, explained during a 2005 Ted Talk, it results in a weak knot. 

For a strong version of the same knot, all you have to do is perform the "swoop it" motion in the other direction and presto. 

You're left with a picture perfect knot that will hang tough and not come undone nearly as often.
