Ann Romney Dodges Gay Marriage and Abortion Questions During Iowa TV Interview

Impact

Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, avoided the controversial subjects of same sex marriage and contraception during an interview with Davenport, Iowa, TV station KWQC -- according to The Hill

“I'm not going to talk about the specific issues. I'm going to let my husband speak on issues,” said Romney when asked if she supported same sex marriage. “I'm here to really just talk about my husband and what kind of husband and father he is,” the aspiring first lady said. “Those are hot-button issues that distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election ... It's going to be about the economy and jobs,” she added.

KWQC’s David Nelson also asked Romney if she agreed that employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control. To which she again sidestepped, “You're asking me questions that are not about what this election is going to be about. This election is going to be about the economy and jobs,” Romney repeated.

Mrs. Romney, who went to great lengths to portray her husband as a loving husband and father in touch with the needs of common Americans, during her RNC 2012 speech, seemed unsettled by the interviewer's insistence. "Female voters want the campaign to remain focused on jobs," she quipped. “What I'm hearing from women all across the country that they are going to look for the guy that's going to pull them out of the weeds and get them job security and a brighter future for their children. That's the message,” she stated. “So really if you want to try to pull me off of the other messages it's not going to work because I know because I've been out there,” she added. Snap!

Tension is running high in both the Romney and Obama campaigns as the DNC and RNC failed to provide any significant bump in the polls for either candidate, leaving the race the way it was before Obama and Romney accepted their respective nominations during their parties' extravaganzas: a dead heat.
