US Embassies Attacked: Fours Americans Dead as Muslim Extremists Riot Over Film

Impact

Rioters in Cairo, Egypt and Benghazi, Libya attacked American embassies after clips from a film they say is an insult to the "prophet," Muhammed, were circulated in the two countries. The film is an amateur production made by an Israeli-American, Sam Bacile, in the United States. In response this "offense," thousands of Muslims took to the streets in Cairo, with several of them managing to scale the wall of the American embassy. They proceeded to tear down the American flag, and replaced it with a black flag and a banner with the words, "There is no God but God and Muhammad is the prophet of God." Hours later in Benghazi, four American consulate workers, including Ambassador Chris Stevens were killed in a rocket attack.

The reaction is typical of the theocratic wing of the Islamic faith, which not only demands that people in predominantly Muslim countries not offend Muslims, but also that no one offend Muslims anywhere. Last month, Muslim theocrackpots in Pakistan demanded an 11 year old girl be punished because she allegedly defaced a Quran. Last year, a Florida pastor named Terry Jones led a Quran burning that prompted a mob in Afghanistan to murder 12 United Nations workers, beheading two of them. In 2006, Muslims radicals attacked several embassies of European countries after a Danish newspaper published cartoons mocking Muhammed.

Making this fiasco even worse was the reaction of American officials, who, instead of reminding these fascists that the U.S. guarantees freedom of speech within its borders, scrambled to placate the angry mob by condemning not their attackers, but the filmmakers. A statement released by the U.S. embassy in Cairo read in part, "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others." It added, "Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy," and condemned the actions "misguided individuals" who hurt the feelings of Muslims.

Granted, the embassy employees no doubt fear for their lives at this point, but it is obvious that some Muslims need reminding that they do not have the right never to be offended by anyone on this planet.
