Charleston Shooting Anniversary Events: A List of Planned Memorials in South Carolina

Impact

The community of Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday began its commemoration of the nine lives taken in a hate-fueled massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church. A memorial service was held Friday morning at the College of Charleston's TD Arena, where Gov. Nikki Haley and others paid tribute to the victims known as the Emanuel Nine.

Dylann Roof, a professed white supremacist, entered the church during an evening bible study and killed nine church members and injured three others last June.

"There hasn't been a day since June 17, 2015, that haven't thought about the 12," Haley said, referring also to the three who were injured, according to the Associated Press.
