Philando Castile Is the 115th Known Black Man Shot and Killed by Police in 2016

Impact

When he was shot during a traffic stop in Minnesota Wednesday night, Philando Castile became the 115th known black man killed by police in 2016, according to the Washington Post's database, which was last updated Wednesday with the death of No. 114, Alton Sterling.

A video taken by Castile's fiancee, Diamond Reynolds, showed Castile slumped over in the driver's seat of a car, blood spreading across his shirt. When Reynolds turned the camera, it showed the shooter — still pointing his gun at Castile, barking for Reynolds to keep her hands where they were. The shooting occurred, in Falcon Heights, a sleepy suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. Castile's age was not immediately clear; although relatives and police said he was 32, Reynolds said that he was about to turn 35.

The shooting comes less than two days, after Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, was shot and killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In the video, the officer screamed that he told Castile not to reach for a firearm. To which Reynolds replied, "You told him to get his ID, sir, his driver's license."

In a matter of hours after the shooting, protestors had arrived outside the Governor's Mansion.

"He was just getting his license and registration," Reynolds said on camera as Castile's body slowly goes limp. "He tried to tell you he was licensed to carry and he was going to take it off. Please don't tell me boyfriend is gone. He don't deserve this."
