Teen Choice Awards Leaves Out Christina Grimmie When Calling for End to Gun Violence

Sunday night's 2016 Teen Choice Awards offered a call-to-action: Young viewers were encouraged by their favorite celebrities to flock to social media with the hashtag #StopTheViolence, dedicated to ending gun violence in the United States. 

Yet at no point throughout the two-hour event did Teen Choice Awards include any honorary segment or dedication to Christina Grimmie, a YouTuber and former Voice finalist who was shot and killed backstage after a performance in Orlando, Florida, on June 10. Many viewers tweeted their outrage over Grimmie's omission.

Grimmie was awarded the choice web star: music award, beating singers like Boyce Avenue and Johnny Orlando, Teen Vogue reported. But audiences were upset Grimmie's posthumous winning wasn't aired on TV.

Grimmie's death came during a weekend of tragic gun violence in Florida, occurring the same weekend a gunman opened fire at the LGBT nightclub Pulse, killing 49 victims.
