Will Smith Performs an Impromptu "Summertime" on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'

Culture

Will Smith was at his best spontaneous self on Tuesday night's Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The actor and rapper had stopped by the show to promote his new film Suicide Squad, in which he's starring as Deadshot. But when he heard the show's band playing the DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince classic, "Summertime" during a commercial break, the MC inside him took over.

Footage from Tuesday night shared across social media shows the iconic moment: Smith leaping off the couch, grabbing a mic from the nearby piano and cutting it up. Audiences at home got nothing but commercials, but the studio audience saw Smith in his Fresh Prince prime.

After spitting the Grammy-winning single's smooth verse, Smith proceed to sit back down with Colbert with just enough time to get himself situated before the commercial break ended.

It's not the first time Smith has burst into song while promoting his film. During a press stop in Miami, he performed the anthem he wrote for the city in 1998. While Smith's latest Suicide Squad might be suffering from some gnarly Rotten Tomatoes reviews, his rap game doesn't seem to have taken a hit.
