Revolution TV Show Review: NBC Trolls Chicago Cubs Fans in Series Episode

Culture

In the post-apocalyptic, iPhone 5-free, parallel universe that NBC's new sci-fi drama Revolution has created during its hyped up pilot episode directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau there's a sequel that has baseball fans giggling beyond the private militias and alcohol-fueled lowlife that accompanies these kind of dystopian shows.

The show, about a future without electricity, featured three of its main characters traveling across the post apocalyptic landscape of Chicago, Illinois, including Wringley Field, the home ballpark of the MLB Chicago Cubs, where a rusty marquee reads: "2012 World Series Champions."

As Yahoo Sports points out, the day the trailer came out, the Cubs' record was 14-20, and had been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Furthermore, the show's producers then digitally erased the Cub's World Series championship, effectively revoking the Cubs' fictional victory, prompting online mockery from the team's critics who highlighted the Cubs haven't been able to win World Series since 1908.

Sports jokes aside, NBC's new dystopian drama, created by Supernatural's Eric Kripke debuted on September 17, 2012 with moderate success thanks in part to the Jon Favreau (Iron Man) directed first episode, which was available on Hulu and NBC.com prior to the broadcast premiere.

Whether the series succeeds in the long run is going to depend on how the audience will engage with story line that depicts a world without the electronic gadgets our society has grown almost addicted to (it is somewhat ironic that the series is premiering so close to Apple's iPhone 5 much anticipated release).

Revolution stars Billy Burke (Twilight) as former Marine Corps sergeant-turned "Monroe Republic" militia-fugitive Miles Matheson; Tracy Spiridakos (Mortal Kombat) as Charlie Matheson, Miles' niece who tracks him down after her brother Danny is abducted; and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as Captain Tom Neville, a former insurance adjuster who joins the Monroe Republic militia after the blackout.
