U.S. gymnasts Simone Biles and Laurie Hernandez have proven themselves as two of the most outstanding athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio — but before they were making history and collecting Olympic hardware together, they were just kids.

Biles posted an undated throwback photo to her Instagram account on Monday, showing her with Hernandez when they were much younger.

"Funny thing is back then we never thought we would be competing at the Olympics," Biles wrote in the caption. "Crazy how things happen, so excited to be competing in Beam Finals today with this girl love you so much!"

Biles uploaded the photo just before she and Hernandez — who made up two-fifths of Team USA's gold medal-winning "Final Five" — competed in the women's balance beam finals on Monday afternoon. They both medaled — Biles, the all-around gold medalist, won bronze and Hernandez won silver.
