Who is Gary in 'Harry Potter?' J.K. Rowling answers about the mystery character.

It seems there's no end to the Harry Potter universe, as author J.K. Rowling continues to add stories to the series and unearth previously unanswered questions. Now, there's a new one after early Harry Potter sketches were found on the Harry Potter site Pottermore: Who is Gary?

One of Rowling's sketches shows the lovable protagonists from Gryffindor from the first book — Neville Longbottom, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter — along with a character simply referred to as Gary on the far right. Naturally, fans had questions.

Thankfully, the Harry Potter fandom didn't have to wait too long for an answer to #GaryGate — Rowling has addressed the question on Twitter. As it turns out, Gary's name was changed to Dean — so he's Harry's classmate, Dean Thomas. Rowling's explanation for changing the name was quite simple: She renamed the character after a boy she knew.

So there you have it. Now Rowling can put the mythology to rest — except for telling fans why Neville and Luna Lovegood never wound up together. That was just disappointing.
