NYC Culture Events: Where to Meet Carla Hall, Susanna Moore, and RL Stine

Culture

Have you ever compared your gorgeous friend to a summer’s day in an attempt to break out of the friend zone? Do you ever tell your BFFs that your boyfriend sometimes acts like a total Darcy? Do you try to do a semiotic reading of 50 Shades of Strictly Okay? In short, are you one of those people that actually visits Project Gutenberg more often than Spark Notes? Well then, I am guessing you spent your childhood reading books while the rest of the morons were busy taking your lunch money. (I still believe Sebastian from fifth grade owes me well over $75,000, and that’s estimating conservatively with a very low annual interest rate.)

Therefore, since you probably read in childhood, the name R. L. Stine should be very familiar to you. So, if you can make it into New York City easily, I would like to inform you all that R. L. Stine will be visiting the Macaulay Honors College on November 13 to promote his latest work and his first novel aimed at adults, Red Rain. The novel has been well received by critics and the event will offer individuals a chance to speak with the author himself and purchase copies towards the end. This event will be open to the public, free of charge, and visitors simply need to RSVP. So, if you remember loving the classic Goosebumps series, you will no doubt enjoy meeting with the man responsible for all those nights we spent under the blanket with the nightlight on.

I slightly flubbed the opportunity to make this post in a timely fashion, so I also have a last minute announcement to make regarding an event happening on October 4, where readers will have a chance to meet with Susanna Moore, who will be promoting her latest work The Life of Objects. The story revolves around a group of art collectors and a young Irish-Protestant lace maker that works for them, set to the backdrop of World War II. The book has seen much critical praise and the event allows readers a chance to meet with the author. As is the case with the R. L. Stine event, this will be free and open to the public, with copies of the work available for sale towards the end. All you need to do is RSVP.

And finally, Carla Hall of ABC’s The Chew is going to be at Macaulay on December 10 in order to promote her latest work, Cooking With Love: Comfort Food That Hugs You. This is a cook that really knows her craft and her work, part cookbook and part family memoir, is sure to please anyone with an interest in busting out the saucepan come the holidays. As always, the event is open to the pubic, free of charge and offers the opportunity to purchase the work towards the end. All you need to do, my good friend, is RSVP.

Is the promotion of this event a manifestation of my love for literature or my overzealousness as a dedicated, go-getter intern? That, my friends, is not a question you can answer by RSVP’ing but by doing so, you can book yourself a seat to three events that are sure to please.

The Macaulay Honors College is located on 35 West 67th Street, New York, NY 10023.
