Election Predictions 2016: Who's on course to win the Clinton vs. Trump contest

Impact

Who will become the next president of the United States? Voters will have to wait until Nov. 8, but if these predictions are any indication, it will be a history-making election.

FiveThirtyEight gives Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton a roughly 86% chance of winning. If she does, she would become the first female president in U.S. history.

The site predicts that Clinton will win about 339 electoral college votes. A candidate needs 270 electoral college votes to get to the White House. FiveThirtyEight forecasts Republican candidate Donald Trump getting about 198 electoral college votes.

On Sept. 26, the day of the first presidential debate, FiveThirtyEight gave Clinton a 54.8% chance of winning. Since then, Clinton has risen in the polls.

The latest RealClearPolitics average of recent national polls puts Clinton ahead of Trump by 5.1 percentage points in a two-way matchup.

Both candidates are campaigning in the battleground state of Florida on Tuesday. Clinton is holding a get-out-the-vote rally in Coconut Creek. Trump has two events, one in Sanford and another in Tallahassee.
