Apple Watch Nike Plus release: Features, colors, price and what we know so far

Impact

Following its reveal at Apple's Sept. 7 event, the Apple Watch Nike Plus arrives in stores on Friday. The smartwatch is designed with running enthusiasts in mind, combining the features of the Apple Watch Series 2 with the Nike Plus Run Club app. The addition of a GPS chip to track movement along with the seamless integration of Nike's fitness app has made anticipation high.

Here's what we know about the Apple Watch Nike Plus so far:

Apple Watch Nike Plus features

A major flaw of the first Apple Watch generation was the omission of GPS. Users could tether their watch to an iPhone for GPS functionality, but running with a bulky phone by your side isn't exactly ideal. The Nike Plus, along with the rest of the Apple Watch Series 2 models, corrects this issue.

A GPS chip is embedded within the Nike Plus, meaning a synced iPhone is no longer necessary to carry. This GPS doesn't just show you where you are — it can also track your pace, route and distance traveled.

If you prefer swimming over running, you're in luck. The Apple Watch Nike Plus is water-resistant up to 50 meters.

The Nike Plus Run Club app is designed to motivate runners and track progress. Once paired with the Nike Plus watch, the app sends run reminders, weather alerts and can share activity with fellow running friends. According to a press release, "Training data — including pace, distance and heart rate — are available at a glance, and through shared run summaries, the app promotes friendly competition, even allowing users to send fist bumps to each other, right from the wrist."

Apple Watch Nike Plus price

The Apple Watch Nike Plus comes in two sizes — 38mm and 42mm — at a price of $369 or $399, respectively. Unlike the standard Apple Watch Series 2, Nike Plus watches have exclusive sport band color combinations, including black/volt, black/cool gray, flat silver/white and flat silver/volt.

The first reviews have yet to arrive, but that will change over the weekend after the Apple Watch Nike Plus debuts on Friday.
