North Carolina Governor Election Night Results 2016: The race is tight

Impact

The North Carolina gubernatorial race has been quite close in the weeks leading up to the election. Many North Carolinians opposed a controversial law that went into effect in March that requires transgender people to use public restrooms in schools and government buildings that correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth.

Ahead of the election, severe flooding from Hurricane Matthew devastated parts of the state. A judge ordered an extension that gave residents in counties hit by flooding five additional days to register to vote.

Polls in North Carolina show a tight race in this battleground state. On Election Day, a RealClearPolitics average of state polls put Cooper ahead by 2.2 percentage points.
