Indiana Governor Election Night Results 2016: Eric Holcomb beats John Gregg

Impact

Republican Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb has won a job promotion in Indiana, defeating Democrat John Gregg in the state's gubernatorial race, according to the Associated Press

Holcomb will replace Gov. Mike Pence, who is GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's vice presidential pick.

Pence was running for re-election with Holcomb when Trump chose Pence to be his running mate in July. Pence withdrew from the governor's race, which led to Holcomb taking his place at the top of the ticket.

In August, a Monmouth University poll had Holcomb ahead by 1 percentage point. By early October, Monmouth had Gregg up by 12 percentage points.

Gregg ran against Pence four years ago and lost.
