Texas Election Results Live: Donald Trump tops Hillary Clinton in the Lone Star State

Impact

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will take Texas' massive haul of its 38 electoral votes, despite polls suggesting the state is no longer the GOP lock it's been since 1980.

Trump topped Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton by 4 percentage points, 50% to Clinton's 46%.

Over the course of the election, polls have showed a tight race in Texas, a state Democrats have been eager to put into play in future elections. A mid-October poll put Trump up by only 3 points. But RealClearPolitics showed the Lone Star State was likely to stay the course this time around, with Trump's support surging in the final days of the race.

Texas has been reliably red for decades. George H.W. Bush won Texas over Bill Clinton in 1992 by about 3.5 percentage points. Four years ago, Mitt Romney beat Barack Obama in Texas by 16 percentage points.

Texas voters appear to feel the weight of their civic duty, with the Dallas Morning News reporting early voting numbers shattered previous records.
